Chapter Sixteen

The Imel pack whipped up the bond-breaking ceremony quickly. The priestess seemed excited to try something she had otherwise only read about. That didn’t inspire a lot of confidence in me about actually surviving the process… Or at least surviving unscathed.

But I had no choice.

If I ever wanted to end up outside the Burrow, this was the first step.

They hadn’t even given me new clothes or a shower, so after over two weeks in my cage, I was pretty ripe. A part of me thought it might be because they wanted to make sure Atlas found me even less appealing. Wanted to make sure there was no way for him to want to take back his decision.

I did my best to look presentable, regardless of how silly it seemed…

The ceremony was to take place in a glade in the middle of the forest not far from the Spoken river. An open, hard-packed dirt circle with a large, white candle on a golden pedestal in the middle.

Trees, ferns, and brush billowed out at the edges where the crowd waited, watching. It wasn’t just the elders who had been invited to attend, there were other, minor or up-and-coming younger pack members who had the privilege of watching this momentous moment in their new leader’s life.

I’d never really considered love before. All my life, I’d been raised to know the power of revenge. Raised to crave the blood of my enemies. I knew how to lie, how to deceive, how to seduce. Love had no place in my life. Not until now. It was a hard pill to swallow. Before, I thought it’d be easy to shake the way I felt about Atlas. That once I got what I came for, I’d be A okay.

The more I thought about him, however, the harder it got and the more difficult it became to tamper the feeling that I really was the bad person in all of this. If I took into consideration what Atlas said about my parents, it made me even more sick to my stomach. Because the truth of the matter was, there were gaps in my parents’ stories, questions they wouldn’t answer, things they wouldn’t tell, parts that just didn’t add up. Not unless what Atlas said was true.

Atlas was standing at the edge of the circle beside his brother, orange torchlight flashing across his face. Rhys was speaking to
